Altrincham expose defensive issues
Rovers were beaten 3–1 by National League side Altrincham in their final friendly. The result was a setback after the more positive work earlier in pre-season and, more importantly, showed that the new-look squad still needs greater cohesion without the ball.
Pre-season scorelines are secondary to fitness and tactical preparation, but conceding three times at home so close to the first competitive fixture gives Clarke and his staff an immediate problem to solve. The match also offered another opportunity to assess combinations involving the club’s recent arrivals without repeating the transfer coverage included in the previous roundup.
Attention turns to Rochdale
The next test carries consequences: Rochdale visit Prenton Park on Saturday in the Carabao Cup preliminary round. The Altrincham defeat therefore matters less as an isolated friendly result than as the final evidence available before Clarke selects his first competitive side of the season.
Rovers now have only a short turnaround to improve their defensive organisation, settle the balance of the team and decide how quickly the latest additions can be integrated. Saturday should provide a much clearer indication of how far the squad has progressed and where further work may still be needed.
