Alex Russell

Seaham-born midfielder Alex Russell began at Everton before becoming a key figure at Southport. He played in Southport's 1966 FA Cup run and 1966–67 promotion campaign, then returned to seal the Fourth Division title with a stoppage-time free kick against Hartlepool in 1973.

A 1971 swap deal took Russell to Blackburn Rovers, followed by spells with Tranmere Rovers and a loan at Crewe Alexandra. He later returned to Southport, played non-league football for Formby and appeared for the Los Angeles Aztecs in the North American Soccer League. Russell was inducted into Southport's Hall of Fame in 2019 and died in June 2022.
