George Yardley

George McArthur Yardley was a Scottish centre-forward from Kirkcaldy whose unusual route to Prenton Park began as a goalkeeper. After starting with East Fife, he converted to attack and later played in Australia for St George-Budapest. Yardley returned to Britain in 1966, briefly joined Luton Town and moved to Tranmere Rovers that November.

He quickly became one of Rovers’ most prolific forwards, helping the club win promotion from the Fourth Division in 1966–67. The following season he scored four times against Shrewsbury Town and recorded hat-tricks against Colchester United and Swindon Town as Tranmere reached the FA Cup fifth round.

He later played again in Australia and had a short spell with Altrincham. After football, he worked as a design draughtsman on the Wirral.
