Tranmere story
William James Steel is a Scottish former centre-forward, born in Dumfries and raised in Dalbeattie. He began his professional career with Oldham Athletic and also represented Wigan Athletic, Port Vale and Wrexham, as well as spending a short loan spell with Deportivo de La Coruña.
Steel joined Tranmere Rovers in 1987 and became an important part of Johnny King's side, helping the club secure promotions in 1988–89 and 1990–91 and win the Football League Trophy in 1990. He retired from professional football in 1992 and later joined Merseyside Police.
