John McMahon

John Joseph McMahon (born 7 December 1949 in Manchester) is an English former professional footballer who played as a right-back.

McMahon joined Preston North End as a 16-year-old in 1965 and made his first-team debut against West Bromwich Albion in the League Cup on 6 October 1970. After a brief loan spell with Southend United, he established himself as a Preston regular and was named the club's Player of the Year for 1971–72.

After leaving Preston in 1979, and following a short loan spell at Chesterfield, McMahon joined Crewe Alexandra. He moved to Wigan Athletic in 1981 and helped the Latics achieve promotion from the Fourth Division during his first season at Springfield Park.

McMahon joined Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer in August 1983. He made 40 Football League appearances for Rovers during the 1983–84 season, without scoring, before subsequently playing non-league football with Altrincham.

This John McMahon should not be confused with the Liverpool-born former player and coach of the same name who later worked on Tranmere Rovers' coaching staff.
