Tom Waring

Thomas “Pongo” Waring was a Birkenhead-born centre-forward who joined Tranmere Rovers in 1926 after playing local junior football. His prolific form at Prenton Park earned a move to Aston Villa in 1928, where he became one of the leading English goalscorers of the inter-war era. Waring set a Villa club record with 49 league goals in the 1930–31 season and won five England caps, scoring four times.

After later spells with Barnsley and Wolverhampton Wanderers, he returned to Tranmere in 1936 and helped Rovers win the Third Division North title in 1937–38. He subsequently represented several other clubs in the North West and remained closely associated with the area.
