Match report
The story of the game
Rovers were forced to withstand long periods of pressure before Nevin scrambled home from close range in the 81st minute. It was a victory built on disciplined defending, important saves from Eric Nixon and a decisive contribution from substitutes John Morrissey and Gary Jones.
Charlton began in a 3-5-2 formation and Tranmere struggled to establish themselves as Charlton attacked with pace down both flanks. The hosts controlled much of the opening hour and created enough opportunities to have taken the lead.
Steve Brown was the principal threat during the first half, passing up three chances as Rovers defended under sustained pressure. His closest effort appeared destined for the net until Gary Stevens produced a brave goal-line clearance with his right foot.
Charlton continued to press after the interval. David Whyte twice found himself in promising positions, but the forward was unable to convert either opportunity. On one occasion he struck dangerously from outside the penalty area, only for Nixon to produce an excellent one-handed save.
Those interventions kept the scores level and allowed Tranmere to remain in contention despite Charlton's territorial advantage. John McGreal was outstanding at the heart of the defence, repeatedly breaking up attacks and carrying the ball forward with purpose. Stevens also delivered an excellent display alongside him.
As the match entered its closing stages, King introduced Morrissey and Jones. The changes gave Rovers fresh attacking impetus and shifted the balance of a contest which had previously favoured the home side.
The decisive move began when Tony Thomas combined cleverly with Liam O'Brien before driving a 15-yard shot against the post. Tranmere kept the attack alive, with Morrissey pulling the ball back and Jones directing it into Nevin's path. The winger reacted quickly inside the goalmouth and forced the ball over the line from close range.
Nevin's finish sparked jubilant celebrations and left Charlton with little time to recover. Having absorbed pressure for much of the evening, Rovers protected their advantage during the closing minutes to secure another valuable away victory.
The result maintained Tranmere's impressive form and strengthened their position in the promotion race. A place in the newly formed Premier League had appeared an unlikely prospect earlier in the campaign, but victory in front of 11,860 spectators moved King's team another step closer to turning that possibility into reality.
Rovers had not produced their most fluent performance, but their defensive resilience and ability to seize the decisive moment proved enough. With their excellent home record and a growing ability to collect points on their travels, Tranmere finished the evening at the summit and firmly established among the leading promotion contenders.
