Match report

The story of the game

Tranmere Rovers suffered their first League Two defeat of the season as two second-half goals gave Gillingham a 2-0 victory at Priestfield. Darrell Clarke's side reached the interval level and created chances of their own, but Logan Dobbs broke the deadlock in the 68th minute before Ronan Hale finished a fast counter-attack 12 minutes later.
Clarke set Rovers up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Joe Ironside leading the line and Dylan Jones, Tom Ince and Charlie Whitaker operating behind him. Captain Will Vaulks partnered Sam Finley in midfield, while Luke McGee started in goal. Alan Young was the referee.
Both goalkeepers were involved early. McGee held Nick Freeman's second-minute effort before Jones tested Ollie Wright at the other end four minutes later. Finley then had a shot blocked from outside the area, while Whitaker fired high and wide after being found by Finley in the 20th minute.
Tranmere enjoyed a useful spell from set pieces as the first half developed. Wright saved Nathan Smith's header from an Ince delivery in the 34th minute, and another Ince cross found Jones three minutes later, only for his header to be blocked. Gillingham offered a warning when McGee kept out Omar Beckles' header in the 38th minute. Jones sent another Rovers effort over before the break, leaving the contest goalless at half-time.
The visitors continued to threaten after the restart. Ince shot over from the right side of the box in the 61st minute, Bobby Faulkner turned another Ince cross wide three minutes later and Jacob Slater missed from a difficult angle in the 66th. Those openings went unconverted, and Gillingham punished Rovers from a corner two minutes later. Faulkner conceded the set piece and Hale supplied the cross for Dobbs to head home from very close range, registering his first senior league goal.
Clarke responded immediately by introducing Tom Conlon and Zane Okoro for Finley and Whitaker. Okoro was quickly involved, seeing one effort blocked after Ironside's headed pass and another fly wide. He then went close again from Conlon's pass in the 78th minute, but Rovers' attempt to recover left space for the decisive second goal.
Gillingham broke forward in the 80th minute and Garath McCleary's through ball released Hale, who finished right-footed into the bottom corner. George Nevett and David Kamara replaced Smith and Slater just before the goal, while Jordan Davies had already come on for Jones. Ince and Davies both had late efforts blocked, and Wright saved Davies' stoppage-time shot to preserve the home side's clean sheet.
The result leaves Tranmere 10th in the League Two table after six matches, with two wins, three draws and one defeat for nine points. Gillingham are 11th, also on nine points, after securing a second successive victory.
