Match report

The story of the game

Tranmere Rovers' second League Two defeat of the season came in a rush of late goals at the SMH Group Stadium, where Chesterfield won 4-2 after the sides had been level with eight minutes remaining. Dylan Jones' 59th-minute header cancelled out Dilan Markanday's first-half opener, but Louie Marsh put the hosts back in front and Josh Koroma struck twice. Jacob Slater replied deep in added time, too late to change the result for Darrell Clarke's side.
Clarke started with a 4-2-3-1 and Joe Ironside up front, but Chesterfield took charge of the first half. Will Vaulks sent an early effort over for Rovers before Marsh shot narrowly wide at the other end. In the 15th minute, Remeao Hutton found Markanday on the right and the Chesterfield forward drove a left-footed finish high into the net from a tight angle. It was the start of a spell in which the home side kept finding room to shoot while Tranmere struggled to threaten Ryan Boot's goal.
Joel Randall missed from the centre of the area and Harrison Male saved another Markanday effort. The hosts also went close through Marsh, while Rovers' afternoon became harder when Zane Okoro was forced off injured in the 34th minute. Dylan Jones took his place. Male saved from Lewis Gordon just before the interval, ensuring Tranmere reached half-time only one goal behind despite Chesterfield's clear advantage in chances. Tom Conlon and Ironside had both been booked, leaving Clarke with decisions to make as his side sought a way back.
Rovers responded after the break. A Vaulks shot was blocked, then Boot saved Charlie Whitaker's drive in the 58th minute. From the ensuing spell of pressure, Tom Ince sent in a cross following a corner and Jones powered a header into the bottom-left corner to make it 1-1. The substitute had been on the field for 25 minutes. Clarke then replaced Ironside and Conlon with David Kamara and Sam Finley in the 61st minute, with the match suddenly open again.
The equaliser did not end Chesterfield's pressure. Male made important saves from Jack Simpson and Koroma in the 72nd minute, then kept out Lee Bonis' header and a long-range George McEachran effort as the home side pressed for another goal. Tranmere had a Tom Ince shot blocked, but the repeated Chesterfield chances made the final stretch increasingly difficult to survive. Paul Cook introduced Koroma in the 71st minute, and the forward soon became central to the decisive spell.
With 83 minutes gone, Chesterfield broke quickly and Markanday set up Marsh to restore the lead from the centre of the box. Two minutes later Marsh turned provider, finding Koroma for a low right-footed shot from outside the area. Koroma added his second at 90+1 after a pass from Bonis, stretching the score to 4-1. Finley supplied Slater for a left-footed finish from the left side of the area at 90+4, but that goal only narrowed the margin before the final whistle.
The 8,186 crowd saw six goals, five of them after half-time, and a result that leaves Tranmere 12th with 11 points from nine League Two games. Chesterfield are eighth on 14 points in the table imported after the match. Jones' equaliser briefly offered Rovers a route to a point, but the late sequence turned a recoverable 1-1 into a heavy away defeat. Clarke's side now have to address the chances conceded as well as the way the match slipped away in its closing minutes.
