Match report
The story of the game
Both sides found openings early. Barnet forced a flurry of corners and twice saw Oisín Gallagher's efforts blocked, while Dylan Jones tested goalkeeper Matthew Cox at the other end. Rovers made their chance count in the 22nd minute: Charlie Whitaker set up Vaulks on the right side of the box, and he drove a right-footed shot into the top-left corner. It was a precise finish that rewarded Tranmere's bright start.
Tranmere had opportunities to extend their lead before the break. Joe Ironside headed wide from Tom Ince's cross after a corner, Whitaker narrowly missed from outside the area following a break, and Jones had two efforts in quick succession just before half-time. Barnet's Adam Senior headed wide late in the half, but Rovers went in 1–0 up. They had created enough to threaten a second goal, yet their advantage remained a single strike.
Barnet made two changes at the interval, bringing on Romoney Crichlow-Noble and Nnamdi Ofoborh. The visitors pressed for an equaliser, though Cox first had to save a Jones shot in the 54th minute. At the other end, Harrison Male saved from Charlie Lakin before Tshimanga headed home from very close range in the 55th. The quick turnaround after Jones's chance shifted the momentum of a match Tranmere had controlled on the scoreboard.
With the score level, Ryan Watson replaced Jones, and Rovers later introduced David Kamara and Bobby Faulkner for Whitaker and Tom Conlon. They came close to regaining the lead in the 79th minute. Jacob Slater's cross found Ironside near goal; his first effort was blocked and Cox saved the follow-up. Barnet remained dangerous too, with Gallagher heading just over after a corner. The contest stayed open as both teams searched for a winner.
The decisive moment came in the 87th minute, when Barnet were awarded a penalty. Faulkner fouled Lakin in the penalty area, and Tshimanga sent his spot-kick into the bottom-left corner. Senior then received a second yellow card for a foul in the second minute of added time. Despite playing with ten men, Tranmere fashioned one final chance deep into a lengthy stoppage period, but Cox held Faulkner's header from Slater's cross. There was no way back for Rovers.
The defeat leaves Tranmere 17th in League Two on 12 points. Barnet, unbeaten in their nine league matches so far, sit second on 21. Those positions reflect the table update recorded after the final whistle. Rovers will rue the chances to build on Vaulks's opener and the late penalty that turned a point into defeat. Their first-half lead had put them in a strong position, but they could not hold it against the visitors' second-half response.
