Match report
The story of the game
Clarke sent Rovers out in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Luke McGee in goal and Faulkner among the starters. Tom Ince had an early shot blocked, but Northampton then created the clearer chances. McGee saved Joe O'Brien-Whitmarsh's effort from outside the area in the ninth minute and was called on twice more in quick succession by Owen Dale. The second Dale attempt came from very close range, but McGee kept it out to prevent the Cobblers from turning their early pressure into a lead.
Northampton continued to threaten. Matty Warhurst fired narrowly wide from outside the area and later missed from the centre of the box. Tranmere responded with a spell of corners of their own: Dylan Jones had a shot blocked after Charlie Whitaker headed the ball into his path, and Whitaker sent a header over from inside the six-yard box following a Will Vaulks cross. The visitors had found a route into the match without losing sight of the danger at the other end.
The breakthrough came after another Rovers corner. Vaulks delivered from the flank and Faulkner met his cross with a header from the left side of the six-yard box, directing the ball into the bottom-right corner. Northampton tried to answer before the interval, but McGee saved a Warhurst shot in the 41st minute. Whitaker then had a header blocked, and Ince missed to the right from the centre of the box in first-half added time. Tranmere took their one-goal advantage into the break.
Northampton applied pressure after the restart. Warhurst, O'Brien-Whitmarsh and Elliott Moore all had efforts blocked during a crowded spell around the Tranmere area, while Connor Lemonheigh-Evans also saw a shot stopped. Warhurst headed over in the 59th minute. Rovers had a chance to stretch their lead when Jacob Slater's cross reached Joe Ironside in the centre of the box, but his shot was blocked. With the score still 1–0, neither side could turn that sequence of chances into another goal.
The home side made three changes together in the 70th minute, introducing Elliott List, Nathaniel Opoku and James Maxwell, then brought on Sam Hoskins six minutes later. Tranmere made no substitutions. Northampton's late push produced three blocked shots in the 86th minute, two from List and one from Hoskins. Hoskins and Joe Wormleighton were also denied by blocks in added time. Rovers nearly finished with a second goal on the break, but Jones sent Ince's pass over from the centre of the box in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
McGee's early saves and the succession of blocks after the interval ensured Faulkner's header remained enough. The result lifts Tranmere to 13th in League Two on 15 points, while Northampton are 23rd on 10, according to the table update recorded after full time. For Clarke's side, the first away win brings a valuable response after Saturday's home defeat to Barnet.
